MC Number Is Going, Going, GONE. Starting Oct. 1st, 2025 What You Need to Know!
Attention all motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders! A major and long-awaited change is coming to the trucking industry. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is officially phasing out Motor Carrier (MC) Numbers, with a final deadline of October 1, 2025. From this point forward, the USDOT Number will become the sole federal identifier for all regulated entities.
This is a monumental shift that has been in the works for years as part of the Unified Registration System (URS). The primary goal of the URS is to simplify the registration process and, most importantly, enhance safety and crack down on fraud. For too long, the use of two separate numbers—one for safety (USDOT) and one for operating authority (MC)—has created confusion and a loophole for unsafe operators.
The most notorious example of this is the "chameleon carrier." These are companies that, after a history of safety violations, accidents, or other non-compliance issues, simply close their business and reopen under a new name with a new MC number. By doing this, they effectively wiped their slate clean, avoiding accountability and continuing to pose a risk on the roads. By consolidating all of a company's information under a single, permanent USDOT number, the FMCSA is making it nearly impossible for these fraudulent carriers to hide. This increased transparency is a major win for the entire industry, protecting legitimate carriers, shippers, and the public from unsafe practices.
This change also streamlines the regulatory landscape. Carriers will no longer have to manage two different identifiers. All of their records, from safety scores and compliance history to permits and insurance filings, will be linked to one number. This makes it easier for you to manage your own records and for your partners to vet your credentials.
What You Must Do to Prepare:
Update Your Records: This is the most critical step. Immediately begin the process of updating all your business documentation. This includes contracts, permits, insurance documents, financial filings (like your surety bond), and even your marketing materials, such as your website, business cards, and email signatures. Every reference to your MC number must be replaced with your USDOT number.
Inform Your Partners: Reach out to all your shippers, brokers, and other business partners to inform them of this change. They will need to update their internal systems and processes to use your USDOT number for all verification and communication.
Stay Informed: The FMCSA's website is the best source for official updates. Continue to monitor their announcements to ensure you are fully compliant with all new guidelines. This includes knowing the new filing requirements, especially for your biennial MCS-150 form, which is also tied to your USDOT number.
For dual-authority companies, this change is particularly important. You will now have a single identifier with a unique suffix, linking both your carrier and broker operations under one unified record. This is a crucial step towards a more efficient and transparent future. The clock is ticking—don't wait until the last minute.
